Arc'teryx LEAF Sphinx Halfshell – Lightweight, breathable and versatile softshell

In mid-2010, Arc'teryx's tactical division launched the LEAF Sphinx Halfshell – a lightweight and functional softshell shirt/jacket. Later, it, along with the matching pants, became part of the LEAF ACL ( Armour Compatible Layering ) series.

Design and materials

The Sphinx Halfshell is a lightweight and breathable half shell, ideal for early fall, late spring and cool summer days. It is made from two types of elastic synthetic materials:

• Tweave Durastretch 520e (91% nylon, 9% spandex) – used for the collar, shoulders and sleeves for increased durability.

• Tweave Durastretch LT 536n (84% nylon, 16% spandex) – a lighter material in the torso and under the arms that provides better breathability.

Both materials are treated with a water-repellent coating, making the jacket weatherproof without compromising comfort.

Unique sleeves with ventilation and flexible fit

The sleeves are what sets the Sphinx Halfshell apart from other combat shirts. They are slightly wider, have profiled elbows (without reinforcements or space for protective pads) and adjustable cuffs with elastic and Velcro.

For optimal ventilation, the sleeves are equipped with 42 cm long YKK zippers with double runners and drawstrings, so they can be easily opened and closed - even with gloves on. However, when the zipper is fully down, the drawstrings can get caught on external equipment.

From long sleeve to short sleeve in seconds

A clever detail of the Sphinx Halfshell is the horizontal straps (approx. 4 cm wide) on the sleeves, which allow you to roll up and fasten the sleeves under the shoulder pockets. This means that the jacket can quickly be transformed into a short-sleeved t-shirt – without having to take off your gloves or equipment.

Here's how you do it – with one hand:

1. Pass the arm through the ventilation opening.

2. Roll up your sleeve.

3. Secure it with the strap under the shoulder pocket.
